About
Laramie Plains Community Federal Credit Union (LPCFCU)
serves all residents of Albany County and Carbon County in
Wyoming and Jackson County in Colorado with a wide array of
financial services. A credit union is a financial cooperative
that is owned by its members. At LPCFCU, our members are the
purpose of our work. Our Board of Directors are volunteers,
elected by our members at our annual meeting.
Organized in 1935 as Laramie
Railroad Employees Federal Credit Union, membership was limited
to the railroad employees of the Union Pacific Railroad located
in the City of Laramie, Wyoming, and members of their immediate
families. Membership continued to expand throughout the years
until 1986 when the name was changed to Laramie Plains Federal
Credit Union. In 1998, the credit union became Laramie Plains
Community Federal Credit Union and membership was opened to
any resident of Albany County, Wyoming. In 2003, the field of membership was expanded, to include Carbon County, and Jackson County, Colorado. (See Membership
section for a complete description of qualifications for membership).
Credit
unions throughout the country are not-for-profit, co-operative,
financial institutions established to provide their members
with a variety of financial services. Each member is an owner
of the credit union and has one vote at the annual meeting
when elections are held for the Board of Directors. All the
members of the Board of Directors and the Supervisory Committee
are volunteers, unlike those of banks who are stockholders.
The credit union movement
originally started in Europe and spread to the United States
in 1934, to provide the common person with financial services
which were unavailable to them anywhere else.
