Our History
The first Credit Union in Laramie and one of the first in the nation, Laramie Plains Federal Credit Union was originally founded as Laramie Railroad Employees FCU in 1935. Established in a time of great financial turmoil, our mission was then as it is now, to provide affordable financial products coupled with exceptional personal service.
Membership was originally limited to employees and immediate family members of Union Pacific Railroad but over the years was expanded to many employees groups. In 1986 the name was changed to Laramie Plains Federal Credit Union. In 1998, membership eligibility expanded further to anyone who lives, works, or worships in Albany County or Carbon County. In 2003, membership was expanded again to include those residents in Jackson County, Colorado. Most recently, membership was expanded to include residents of Platte County, Wyoming.
Many things have changed since 1935. No longer limited to savings and small loans, our products and services encompass almost every facet of the financial services industry.
The one thing that has not changed at Laramie Plains FCU is our commitment to the community. The communities we serve have supported us for over seven decades and we work hard to donate our time and resources to worthy causes.
Credit unions throughout the country are not-for-profit, co-operative financial institutions established to provide their members with a variety of financial services. Each member is an owner of the credit union and has one vote at the annual meeting when elections are held for the Board of Directors. All the members of the Board of Directors and the Supervisory Committee are volunteers, unlike those of banks who are stockholders.
The credit union movement originally started in Europe and spread to the United States in 1934, to provide the common person with financial services which were unavailable to them anywhere else.
